Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Paints and Lip Kit – Reviews

To date although I have reviewed many liquid lipsticks (which you can check out here) I haven’t yet reviewed one which is from the high street. They’re usually by indie or high end brands. So this definitely makes a change and I was pleasantly surprised by these beauties.

A few weeks ago I ventured into Boots to pick up one of the new Barry M Matte Me Up Lip Kit’s after hearing about them on their Instagram page. I swatched all three shades to see what they were like and ended up falling in love with the one shade, Runway. The lip kits come in three limited edition shades including Runway, Pose and Go To.

Runway lip liner

Runway liquid lipstick

Runway, the shade that I opted for is a gorgeous dusky rose pink colour and is a lovely alternative to a nude pink shade. I’m a massive fan of my darker shades so this is a lovely shade to opt down to if I don’t want anything dark, but nothing too light either. It’s a shade I can see me wearing more during the warmer months due to it being a warm shade.

The lip kits are like the Kylie ones where you get a liquid lipstick and a lip liner and I have to say it is such a shame these are only limited edition!

The lip liner for Runway is beautiful and creamy for a pencil but this being said I think Barry M do the best lip liners out there. This matches the colour of Runway perfectly and is one I’ll be using with other lipsticks, both normal and liquid. It glides on easily with no dragging and is comfortable to wear on its own without the liquid lip liner.

Before I talk more about the formula I also want to talk about two more shades from the permanent range of the Matte Me Up range. There are five shades to choose from, Paparazzi, On The Scene, Minimalist, Pop Up and Embellish. I picked up the latter two.

Pop Up is a dark pink/red shade which reminds me of cherries. It is a lovely alternative to a hot pink or even a vintage red shade. This will look great all year around.

Embellish is a purple shade and one that isn’t too dark, nor too light which I really like. I’ve never owned a purple shade that sits in between which makes a nice change. It reminds me of the Yankee Candle Vineyard grape due to the shade. I wore it yesterday and I definitely turned heads…

SO enough of the shades, what about the formulation? Well I wrote down some pros and cons of these liquid lipsticks and the majority of them were pro. Woohoo just what I want!

These don’t have a thick consistency and are actually on the watery side, but that doesn’t stop their pigmentation from being perfect. Due to the consistency of these it means a little bit of this goes a long way when applying. Majority of the time I won’t dip back into the tube to get more product, but if I do it’s because I just want to.

I worried due to how good their lasting time is that they wouldn’t come off very easily. I’ve had this with liquid lipsticks in the past and they’ve caused my lips to be really sore during wear and when removing. These are hard to get off in the sense of smudging. They don’t smudge easily and due to this they’re just as hard to remove with make up removers, UNLESS they contain oil! This isn’t a bad thing to be honest. It means your liquid lipstick shade of choice isn’t going to come off in a hurry.

These don’t really have any scent to them. I even asked Dane if he could smell anything as I couldn’t work it out myself. In the end we both agreed that they do have some sort of creamy sweet scent mixed with a slight chemical scent… This being said they’re pretty scentless when applying to the lips and when I say chemical, I don’t mean in your face. Only if you keep smelling them like me and Dane did. 😛

Like all liquid lipsticks these don’t like anything with oil in, so greasy food is a no no with these! After having some lunch with Dane on Sunday I needed to reapply Embellish which wasn’t a problem. I did of course worry that this wouldn’t be easy to reapply but alas it was fine and didn’t look any different afterwards, which I was very happy about.

What else makes me happy about these liquid lipsticks is the price! The permanent shades are all £4.99 each, whilst the three limited edition lip kits are £6.99 each. A complete bargain in comparison to what people pay f0r the Kylie lip kits!

Although the shade selections are great I do wish they had brought out some more unique shades, like black, grey, some brown shades (even though I don’t like them…) and some other shades too. I would so buy a black shade if they brought one out!

Something I wish Barry M had of done is release lip liners for ALL the shades, as the Runway one is amazing and it is such a shame it’s only limited edition for 3 shades. They should have done it with them all!

I’ve already covered about how hard these are to remove and whilst that isn’t a bad thing, it’s also not a great thing for me to be honest. I like to be able to remove something fairly easy when I’ve had enough of it. I need to buy myself some more oil based make up remover that’s for sure!

Of course I’ve shown all these off of course on myself so you can get an idea of what they look like on my yellow skin tone.

Overall I LOVE these liquid lipsticks and they’re definitely a winner for me! I want to pick up more shades, even though I don’t need them… I’ve already decided I’ll be buying most of these for my mom for Mother’s Day as she’s recently gotten into liquid lipstick so I know she’ll love these!

If you’re a newbie to liquid lipsticks or don’t want to pay through the teeth for one, definitely give these a go ESPECIALLY whilst they have their limited edition lip kits out! They’re well worth the money.

Do you think you’ll try these babies out? If so which shade(s) do you think you’ll be picking up?  Hey, have you already tried these? If so make sure to let me know what you think of them in the comments down below!

Until next time, take care all and I hope you had a lovely weekend.
