This is a spontaneous topic today and do you want to know why? Well it’s Sunday and I have spent ALL DAY at my cousins Christening. My cousin M (won’t use full names in case they don’t want them used) christened her baby E today and oh my it was lovely. I’ve only been to one Christening and it was my cousin N’s when she was a baby and I was about 6.
M asked me and Dane to take some pictures of the day, as I have my fancy Nikon digital SLR (which I haven’t used FOREVER!) and she wanted some special pictures for the day. It was a pleasure to be honest and we took so many pictures…. 2,225 to be exact. This evening we’ll be popping them onto our computer to view and begin editing throughout the week.
However, this isn’t what I want to talk about today. Today I want to talk about some of the things that me and my two cousins M and N used to get up to during the summer holidays.
From as long as I could remember, most days after school, any school holidays and especially the summer holidays me and my two cousins used to hang out all day, every day and whilst we had some arguments, tantrums and fall outs, we always hung out every year until we were old enough to disperse out with our friends and do our own thing.
I thought with the summer holidays starting to the kids tomorrow, it would be nice to write a reminiscent post about what we used to get up to and how different it was back then for kids, to how it is now.
I really hope you enjoy reading this post, as I know I am going to LOVE writing it! π

- Sitting indoors playing games.
The majority of the time we would play various games on N’s dodgy PlayStation and the one I remember us playing the most was Spyro 2. We would play it from the beginning and each of us would have a world to complete, as well as a boss too. I remember N would beat the first boss, M the second and I’d always get Ripto to beat. We would go through the various challenges in levels and each of us would have a go if the previous one couldn’t crack it. There were some funny moments in that game and we would stress like mad having to hear the characters saying the same phrase over and over again! The track ones were the worst, but also the best! Each of us were good at doing certain challenges. Whilst we played games we’d binge eat various Pot Noodles, vanilla ice cream sandwiches, as well as various other things. It was glorious and whilst we probably should have been outside in the garden, staying in and playing Spyro was pretty bad ass instead.

- Riding our bikes up and down the road.
I say the road, we always rode them on the pathway. We would ride our bikes up and down our grans road and oh man they were some awesome times! You’d ride the bike all the way up the road to come back down REALLY fast. I think we probably pissed off some of our grans older neighbours, so we tried to be good most of the time. My cousin M was the one who taught me how to ride a bike and I remember how I used to always ride my white and pink bike with the stabilisers attached when I was about 9 or 10. The local kids would take the piss and I got pretty embarrassed by it. So M being M she showed me how to ride without them and before I knew it, I was a pro! My parents soon bought me a bigger bike after that.

- Film funny videos.
I can’t for the life of me remember how old we were, but one year my cousin M had her video camera and we filmed some pretty funny videos on it. I’m pretty sure she still has them somewhere, in black and white of us pretending to be old women. I think it was called, “Independent Women” and it was fucking hilarious! We just took the piss out of older women who like to stay at home, eat junk food and every now and again go and play bingo. Legit what my life is like now. π
- Listened to Clubland and NOW CD’s.
If we weren’t sat in the garden listening to it, we were sitting in the house listening to it. Whilst I listened to pop music growing up, I did love my rock music from an early age, but I also loved club music too! My cousin M would always get the newest NOW CD so we’d have the best summer tunes in the garden. I remember the first NOW CD I bought was NOW 45 (legit put it on to listen to now…) and I loved listening to it so much over the summer holidays.

- Watching films.
We always watched films whenever the weather was crap, or if the mood took us to watch Bridget Jones for the 20th time, or Disney films and sing along with the characters… Although that bit did make me cringe a little. I did used to love watching funny films however and some I loved watched with M and N were Shrek, 10 Things I Hate About You and as I mentioned earlier, Bridget Jones. I remember one summer my cousin M rented the second one for us to all watched and we didn’t pay attention AT ALL! I wish we had though as it was bloody hilarious.
Those are just 5 things me, N an M used to do together during the summer holidays. We used to all love hanging out together, although the older I got I started to just want to stay at home on my computer, talking to friends on MSN and MySpace. I definitely turned into a recluse. I do miss being a kid sometimes, but at the same time I really don’t. Being a kid sucked and although you had nothing to worry about, you did all the same.
But that aside, today has really shown me how much I did used to love hanging out with my cousins as kids, and the memories I’ve got and will always have from it.
What are some of your favourite summer holiday memories as a kid? Make sure to let me know in the comments!
Until next time, take care all and I hope you had a lovely weekend.
